Crochet Scrunchie - 004

Crochet Scrunchie - 004

£17.78

Large-sized crochet hair scrunchie with elastic band.

A handmade-by-mum item (made by eye, no pattern) using acrylic yarn ends.

This one is wide and floppy so is great to tie a couple times to bulk up, or leave more dramatic against the head.

MATERIALS.

Yarn ends; acrylic yarn in hot pink, bright orange, yellow and black.

Elastic; knitted band in grey (note, this is slightly visible when stretched).

See full description in the dropdown below.

SIZING.

This crochet scruchie is large in size, and can be wrapped around a bun/ponytail once or twice depending on the thickness of the hair and the look you want.

The photo showing the scrunchie around the wrist is to give guidance on the look of the item. Some of the crochet scrunchies have more layers/frills and so stand more upright.

Measurements:

  • Diameter (including centre) - 19.5cm / stretches to 33cm

  • Diameter of centre - 3.5cm / stretches to 18cm

  • Depth - 1cm

  • Selection of acrylic yarn ends from mum’s stash. She chose them as she went, making up the pattern as she went too.

I would’ve chosen an organic cotton natural rubber elastic, but she’d already bought these bands! Nylon and synthetic elastic circular knitted “no-damage” tie". She may have got the recycled nylon pack, but no packaging so unsure!

If you were to take this product apart, however, the components could be separated and re-used i.e. elastic hair tie, separate coloured yarns.

  • As with above, these crochet scrunchies were handmade by mum, while watching telly, to her own design. It does mean there could be some “flaws” such as visible yarn ends or crude knots. However, the overall durability is good, and though scrunchies will get a lot of wear going on and off the head, they’ve been tested loads with lots of pulling.

As mentioned, this one in particular is locked where the layers are joined and consequently the elastic band doesn’t stretch fully! But you can still wear it around a bun or ponytail and should stay tight.

Ordinarily I would personally avoid acrylic, due to its ability to shed microplastics, and this is of course a massive concern with an item that will be handed a lot. That being said, these scrunchies were made with care using leftover materials, and provided you limit your washing (or use a filter), you’re doing what you can to prevent microfibre release.

  • Due to the central elastic band, hand wash would be recommended with a light detergent or soap nuts.

Ideally don’t tumble dry as the heat breaks down elastic and acrylic fibres.

  • The item will be shipped wrapped in recycled tissue paper and a re-used mailer bag. Depending on if you purchase additional items, this is likely all that will be used as this isn’t a delicate item.

  • Yarn ends - £0.69, from a stash approximately 30g

    Elastic hair tie - £0.30

    Labour - approximately 45 minutes x NLW @ £12.21/h

    Packaging - £0.01

    Total: £1.00 (materials) + £9.16 (labour) = £10.16 × 1.75 = £17.78

A low retail markup would be x 2. Ideally handicraft would be valued higher, but it is understandably cost prohibitive. In this instance, better that mum’s work is enjoyed.

To ensure a small profit can be passed to her, an embedding of value to handmaking, ability to sell the item, and covering of overheads (website, energy, studio), I have settled on a markup of x 1.75.
